If you have not started looking for an off campus house for rent for the 2017-2018 School year starts now! Houses are going fast and if you have a favorite house that you would like to look at or sign on you need to move fast. Most large houses go first and two bedrooms are usually the last to sign. Houses for rent around the university less than a mile away always go before another. Take a look at the properties and the locations on the maps. Most of the Bumbacahouses for off campus rentals are in the area and walking distance from campus. Please contact Cosimo for questions or need help on what places will work best for you.

Home & Personal Safety

Students’ safety and security is of utmost concern to the University. Within the Notre Dame campus, Notre Dame Security Police (NDSP) provides 24/7 security coverage.

In the local community, the area surrounding the University falls under the jurisdiction of the South Bend Police Department , the Saint Joseph County Police Department , or the Mishawaka Police Department.

Although the local South Bend and Mishawaka communities have much to offer students who live off-campus or spend time socializing off-campus, it is important for students to recognize that — as with any city — individuals need to be alert in their surroundings and use common sense. This section of the website outlines suggestions, tips, and resources offered by Crime Prevention officers from NDSP as well as from local police departments.

Renters Insurance Off Campus Living ND

If you have never lived on your own before, this may be the first you’ve heard of renter’s insurance. Here are some quick tips and considerations.
  • If the house or apartment where you live is broken into, catches on fire, is hit by a tornado, or floods, it is quite likely that your landlord will have insurance to cover the damage. In almost every case, thelandlord’s insurance ONLY covers damage to the building—NOT damage to your personal property.
  • Your landlord will not likely choose to (or be legally responsible for) replacing your TV, bike, clothing, books, DVD player, ipod, etc. It is up to you to protect these items.
  • The only way to ensure that your property will be covered in any of the instances described above is to get renter’s insurance.
  • Ask your parents for their advice about insurance providers. It is likely that they have some kind of insurance (homeowners’ insurance, auto insurance, life insurance, etc.) from a company they like and would recommend. This is a good place to start.

Notre Dame Off Campus Living.

You’ve done it! You have officially moved off-campus. Now what? Well, before you starting pulling your hair out, just relax and take a breath. This is not dorm life, so there will be many more responsibilities—but many benefits as well.

Instead of dining hall food (lovely though it may be), you can concoct your own culinary masterpieces….have your room however you like it, and probably have much more space to live in than your old dorm room. But before you start enjoying the off-campus life TOO much, be aware of a couple of things:
  • Renter’s insurance—in case a disaster strikes and your stuff gets broken/stolen/drowned/ruined/hurled across the sky with flying cows, a la the 1996 summer blockbuster Twister. Hey, it could happen.
  • Social gathering pointers—including tips on how to talk with your neighbors as well as police officers

Notre Dame Student Off campus - Things to know

Please remember you don't have to pay for utilities till you move in; however please take note that turning on utilities is not a quick setup. The utility companies will need a few days to have the electricity and gas turned on. This being said, please click HERE for local utility companies in the area, Cable TV and other services.

Also I strongly recommend that at the very least you have the electric setup to be turned on June 1st or 2nd, as you may want it on for when you move in and not after which may be the case if you wait. That way when you move in you will have electricity  working. If you are not going to be moving in till sometime around August it is still recommended that you do it before had to have it scheduled for June 1st or 2nd.

Starting Your Search

It is getting closer to crunch time and if you are plaining on finding a house for off-campus living now is the time to start looking. With the high demand for off-campus housing and limited space on Notre Dame Campus it is harder for students and faculty to find a place that they can call home. Remember the sooner you start looking for a house the better you chances in getting a house of your choosing.
